A vintage photo booth: retro outside, digital inside

Planted Czytaj po polsku →

Instead of a photo booth that looks like a cash machine, I wanted one that fits in with the decor of the venue. That’s how the Vintage Photo Booth came about: wooden and retro on the outside, digital inside. Guests take their own photos and keep the prints as souvenirs or leave them with the hosts, building one big guest book.

Wooden photo booth cabinet with black edges: five retro filament bulbs and an instruction card on top, a black tray sticking out of the side
The booth’s cabinet, with instructions for guests.

What it does

  • unlimited photos, taken by the guests themselves,
  • prints on Epson media, from 10×15 cm up to A4 – better than from instant cameras like Polaroid or Instax,
  • overlays, text, frames and labels added to photos automatically,
  • automatic upload to an online album that only guests can see,
  • cards with instructions and a link to the gallery, also as a QR code – no password to type,
  • reprints at a later date.
The photo booth set up in a room with floral wallpaper: a retro wooden camera on a tripod, two studio lights, guests, and prints on a round table
The booth at work: a wooden “camera” on a tripod, studio lights and prints on the table.

It works well at weddings and the day-after parties, family gatherings, company events and proms.

Still to come

This is a seedling for now. I’ll add the build details when I come back to this note:

  • the camera and how the shot is triggered,
  • the electronics and the bulbs on the cabinet,
  • the printer and printing from 10×15 cm up to A4,
  • the software: overlays, uploading to the online album and QR codes,
  • lighting and camera settings,
  • building the enclosure.
