Quieting a buzzing transformer in an APC Back-UPS CS 500

Planted Czytaj po polsku →

My APC Back-UPS CS 500, running from the mains with no load at all, buzzed on and off – loud enough to be annoying.

How the UPS sounded before the fix: running from the mains, no load.

Where the noise comes from

That kind of buzz is the core vibrating in an inductive component that has play against its bobbin. You find it by touching the cores one by one and listening for the sound to change – carefully, with an insulated tool, because there is mains voltage inside.

In my unit the culprit was the transformer marked 430-0119D-Z. From what I found, it handles battery charging, which explains the on-off buzz: it stops once the battery reaches its target voltage.

Ways to fix it

  • a drop of glue between the core and the bobbin – even hot glue will do for a test,
  • if the gap is wider, a small piece of rubber pushed in,
  • tying the bobbin with thread or a rubber band so it cannot move against the core,
  • impregnation: desolder it and boil it in paraffin wax for a few minutes – an old, effective method that also protects against moisture.

What I did

The gap was narrow, so thick hot glue or silicone were out. I took the path of least resistance and ran cyanoacrylate into it, which wicks well into tight gaps. Once it set, the buzz is only audible from about a metre away, which is plenty good for me. Everything works and nothing caught fire.

Before opening a UPS, unplug it and disconnect the battery.
